Press Release

Marc Jancou Contemporary, Geneva, is pleased to present John Miller and Richard Hoeck emblematic Hard Hat, 1999 and the debut of Soft Hard Hat, 2016 in conjuction with the film Mannequin Death, 2015.
John Miller and Richard Hoeck’s original edition Hard Hat, 1999 published by Hard Hat Editions was inspired by the iconic 1960s TV Bonanza, specifically by the hat worn by one of the program’s characters, Hoss. Miller and Hoeck produced a version in pink felt with a higher crown that looked emphatically phallic. Rejoining the subject nearly 20 years later, the two’s new project Soft Hard Hat, 2016, an apparently limp version, reflects the passage of time through what might be interpreted as erectile dysfunction. Soft Hard Hat, 2016 is an edition of 9 and 2 APs produced by Marc Jancou Editions.
John Miller and Richard Hoeck have collaborated for eighteen years. Their work has been featured in several exhibitions in Europe and the United States including those at the Kunshalle Wein, Vienna, Kunst-Werke Berlin. The recent monograph, More Alive Than Those Who Made Them (published by WhiteWalls, 2015) retraces the duo’s mannequin works. Currently, The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami is holding a retrospective Miller’s work titled “I Stand/I Fall.”
Soft Hard Hat, 2016, and Miller and Hoeck’s recent film, Mannequin Death, 2015, will be on continuous view from our window at rue des Bains 63 - 1205, Geneva. For more information about the exhibition please contact Joseph Favre at geneva@marcjancou.com
