Roger Herman noted as an expressionist painter, has become interested in ceramic as the ground on which to explore his gestural draughtsmanship. Herman's ceramics come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes that reveal his commitment to extensive experimentation on the wheel and in the kiln-happy accidents of color and form produce a compelling array of work. Herman covers his ceramics with painted images derived from Manga comics, advertisements, porn magazines and films, as well as from a host of art historical sources. Roger Herman received an M.F.A. from the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Karlsruhe. A Professor of Art at UCLA, Herman has received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a DAAD grant from Germany. In addition to his many solo and group exhibitions, his work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, MOMA San Francisco, The Walker Art Center, and The Eli Broad Collection. Herman lives and works in Los Angeles.
