Opening Reception April 10, 6-8pm
Marc Jancou Contemporary is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Thomas Zipp: Paintings 2002-2007. Five years after the gallery's first Thomas Zipp exhibition in 2003, its engagement with the work is carried on in a survey of paintings produced from 2002-2007, which is comprised mainly of portraits and landscapes.
Thomas Zipp reinvestigates stories, myths, and utopias from the past, which he translates into a contemporary context. Drawing from varied sources of inspiration, ranging from philosophy, art history, politics, and pop culture, Zipp creates a critical distance from these references through unusual combinations and unexpected styles.
Born in Heppenheim in 1966, Thomas Zipp currently lives and works in Berlin. Solo exhibitions include Harris Lieberman, New York; Galerie Guido W. Baudach, Berlin; South London Gallery, London; Patricia Low Contemporary, Gstaad; Rubell Family Collection, Miami; Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna; Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Munich; and Patrick Painter Inc., Santa Monica. Recent group exhibitions include Made in Germany, Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover; Kommando Friedrich Hoelderlin Berlin, Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin; Final Exhibition at 4 Clifford Street, Alison Jacques Gallery, London; Deformation of Character, PS1, New York; Rings of Saturn, Tate Modern, London; Of Mice and Men, 4th Berlin Biennal of Contemporary Art, Berlin; and man muss das adjektiv abschaffen, Baronian_Francey, Brussels.
